6 Things I Wish Momma Told Me About Social Media

12 October 2011

Social MediaSocial Media can provide lots of great exposure for your business. Before you dive in head first, there are a few mistakes you will want to avoid. After all, momma wouldn’t  think that was prudent.

1. Mixing Personal with Business - Unless you are the brand, separate your personal social media accounts from your business accounts. From a business perspective, most people don’t want the details of your personal life. They are more interested in your products and services rather than pictures of your family vacation.

2. Incomplete Profiles – Social media profiles provide an excellent opportunity for business. Make sure that you fill out your company profiles completely. An incomplete profile comes across as unprofessional.

Will Google Caffeine Leave Your Site in the Dust Part 4 ?

6 July 2010

Google CaffeineAccording to Google, caffeine has changed the way that Google is indexing information into their data centers. Not only is Google delivering the results much faster ( by about 50%) they are indexing much more information as well. They are delivering more search results than ever before. As peoples’ expectancies for the best search results increases, so does Google’s desire to deliver the most relevant results. If you are an SEO, it is more important than ever to help your client deliver  quality content to their audience as well as get them quality back links. The game of SEO is ever changing, and the rules are different for each search engine. It is more important now, more than ever, to select an SEO company, that offers a full online marketing plan rather than just a simple SEO strategy.

Google is now pushing site owners to embrace a wider marketing strategy online, rather  than back linking alone. Blogs are more important than ever because they post new fresh content, and with Google showing real time results in their SERPs from social sites like Twitter, which gets well over 19 billion searches each and every month, businesses should jump on board rather than wait and react.

As more people search online and as Google has more data that tracks users’ search habits and queries, Google will only get better and the sites that make it onto that precious first page, will need to get better too!

Social Networking Versus Social Marketing

25 April 2010

Social NetworkingA lot of people are totally missing the boat when it comes to marketing their business online. They seem to think that once they have the right to contact you online (maybe you followed them on Twitter or sent a friend request on Facebook) that they also have the right to shove their products and services down your throat as fast and endlessly as they can.

Somehow they seem to miss the fact that their is social etiquette online just like their is social etiquette in everyday life. If you had not seen a friend for a while, would you hit them with your sales pitch right away or would you first try to renew your acquaintance with them by having them over or lunch or dinner? I hope that you would elect to freshen up the relationship first. Now if you have the common sense to handle a friend that way, how do you think that you should handle someone that you have never met online?

I am amused that as soon as you follow someone on Twitter, that you quickly receive Direct Messages pushing their stuff repeatedly. It use to be that email spam was the big problem. Now, it’s social media spam that is rearing it’s ugly head. I think that if these people offered to genuinely help people build their businesses and help individuals achieve their personal goals, then they would have no problem selling their stuff too.

People and companies have no problems with buying. People actually love to buy, but they absolutely detest being sold to. So, if you are about to launch into social marketing, maybe it is best if you think of it as social networking. Take the time to network and help others. It will only increase your bottom line.

Applying the Laws of Marketing to Twitter and Social Media Part 2

19 January 2010

Twitter MarketingThis is what the marketing model looks like when applied to social sites like Twitter.

1. Target your customers quickly and easily through Twitter

You can find and follow potential clients online very quickly by using the Advanced Twitter search feature that lets you geo-target them within a certain radius and city. With it, you can get pretty specific quickly with Twitter when it comes to reaching out to potential clients. You can also use sites like Nearby Tweets to target in on future customers with their geo-targeting and industry specific search features.

2. Build Your Twitter Followers

Once you have located and followed them, tweet about content that is helpful and informative to your potential client, and they may return the “love” and follow you back. If you badger them with sales messages, you can expect a very poor follow rate.

3. Create a Blog

Include your link on Twitter in your profile that gives people the option to dig a little deeper into what your services and products are. You do not have to set up a blog but you will get the most benefit if you do and we will discuss why in the next step. You can also use a website or your Facebook page to provide more information about your products and services. Make it easy for visitors to find your services, products, and special offers once they arrive from Twitter onto your site.

4. Write Quality Blog Content

There are plug-ins available for Word Press that allow you to tweet the title of your blog posts automatically to Twitter. The tweet will include a link back to the blog article where people can read the full blog post. Once they are on your site, that is your chance to sell to them. These Twitter posts that include your links may get retweeted to their followers which will bring your blog more traffic.

5. Track the Traffic and Results

You should be tracking and taking a look at your traffic statistics to get a good understanding of where your traffic is coming from and how much traffic you are getting. Google offers the very popular free tool known as Google Analytics to help you do this. It is very easy to set up and only takes about 10 minutes to do so. By tracking your Twitter traffic, you will see what is getting you the best results and you will be able to adjust accordingly for better results.
